Maria Camila Osorio Serrano shot to fame by winning the 2019 US Open junior girls singles title last week but the 17-year-old has been around on the lower women’s tennis circuit for about a year.

The Colombia-born Osorio Serrano defeated USA’s Alexandra Yepifanova in a one-sided final, winning the title 6-1, 6-0 and in her press conference later, called out Roger Federer as her inspiration and an idol.

She said at her press conference:

“If he’s watching this, This is for you, too. You’re my inspiration. I love you so much. I hope he can say something to me. Just like, ‘Hi.’ It’s okay for me. Just ‘hi’ would be fine.”

Osorio Serrano was a semi-finalist at the French Open junior girls singles competition she has won three titles at the ITF level as well.

Two of those three titles came at Guayaquil in Ecuador just a fortnight before the start of the US Open and that has propelled her ranking from 475th at the start of the year to 227th right now.

Her best result of the season came at the Claro Open in Bogota where she defeated the 193rd-ranked Conny Perrin and 93rd-ranked Kristie Ahn, before coming up against Amanda Anisimova in the quarter-finals. While she managed to take a set off Anisimova in that encounter, her 18-year-old opponent displayed more experience and calmness to get through to a win.

One of her immediate ambitions is to focus on playing as a pro and improve her rankings enough to make it to the Australian Open 2020 qualifiers.

Fan of all sports but a tennis lover at heart. Bawled her heart out when Federer missed those two Championships points at Wimbledon 2019 but then again, Nadal won 2022 Australian Open from two sets down. Such is life! (yes, loves both Federer and Nadal in equal doses!)
