Edmund Fell in the Cincinnati Opener

Facing Kevin Anderson, who was attempting a comeback following his injury woes, in the first round of the Cincinnati Open, Edmund gave a good account of himself but went down in three sets. He stretched Anderson to a tie-breaker in the first set, won the second before the South African took hold of the match.

Edmund did come into that tournament with a string of fine performances under his belt on hard court surfaces. Playing in the Battle of the Brits in the UK, he had made the final of the tournament before losing to the Brit number one Dan Evans. In doing so he defeated Andy Murray in one of the matches too.

And he followed it up with five singles wins from six matches at the team event of the same competition.

Now Edmund plays his first match at the US Open where he was knocked out in the first round at both, the 2018 and 2019 edition. In fact it’s been six Grand Slams now since he won a couple of matches at it.

Bublik Close to His Best

In February this year, Bublik jumped to 47th on the rankings which was his best ever. This was thanks to an appearance at the Marseille Open semifinal before he went down to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

While Bublik was a first round loser at the Australian Open, he had achieved his best showing in a Grand Slam last season at this very competition in Flushing Meadows. Bublik won a couple of rounds in five sets to make it to the third where he was sent packing by Pablo Andujar.

Unfortunately for Bublik, much like Edmund he fell in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters, losing to Karen Khachanov in straight sets. One of the main problems facing the Kazakh in this match will be the lack of practice on hard court surfaces, having played a string of matches on clay in May but just the one on hard court – the one at the Cincinnati Open.

Kyle Edmund v Alexander Bublik Prediction & Tip

Edmund can be expected to edge out Bublik in this one but won’t be a straightforward victory. Expecting him to come through in either four sets or five.

Tip: Edmund to win: 8/11 (bet365)
