Eugenie Bouchard v Iga Swiatek Head to Head

There has been no previous clash between the 168th-ranked Bouchard and Swiatek, who is just 19 years old and looking for a breakthrough performance.

Bouchard’s Clay Strategy Continues to Pay Off

A semifinalist at the 2014 French Open, Bouchard never got past the second round after that in any of the following editions at Roland-Garros. This time around, featuring in the tournament as a wildcard, Bouchard has done just that and has her decision to focus on clay even during the pandemic break to thank for it.

For starters, Bouchard looks to have worked extremely hard during the off season, and then opting to not remain in America for the hard court swing looks to have worked. The Canadian former world number five had played in three clay court tournaments in the lead-up to the French Open and almost ended up winning one of them.

That performance in Istanbul, where she eventually finished second in the final, looked to have built her confidence even further and that has showed here at the French Open this time. A fairly straightforward win over Anna Kalinskaya began her campaign here but there was always going to be that fight moving forward in the draw.

Daria Gavrilova might not be the toughest opponent she faces on paper, but the second round match was exactly that. Lasting two hours and 24 minutes, Bouchard overturned a set deficit to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 and set up a third round meeting with Swiatek.

Swiatek Eases Through to the Third

While Bouchard has had to take bit of a circuitous route to the third round, Swiatek has had it way easier. After her shock win over the 2019 French Open runner-up Market Vondrousova, she came through in another straight-set victory over Hsieh Su-Wei, winning 6-1, 6-4 to set up this third round clash.

The match lasted a mere hour and seven minutes and it was Swiatek’s ability to attack her opponent’s poor second serve that got her the advantage. While Hsieh had a higher first serve percentage, 60% to Swiatek’s 52, she won just 20% of her points off it and was broken six times in the match by the Pole.

Swiatek’s crucial 24 winners also helped but she would love to get her unforced errors lower than the 17 she made over that short an encounter.

What awaits Swiatek is a career-best-equalling fourth round spot at the French Open if she wins this and a possible match-up with the tournament player Simona Halep (who is facing Amanda Anisimova in her third round).

Bouchard v Swiatek Prediction and Tip

Swiatek, whose Grand Slam record this year reads a fourth round at the Australian Open and third round at the US Open is a heavy favourite at 8/15 to make it to another fourth round here. Bouchard’s experience and her recent form and fighting spirit should count for something though and we might see one of the sets getting stretched to the distance.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
