Naomi Osaka v Nina Stojanovic Head to Head

Osaka and Stojanovic have never played each other before this in a competitive match.

Osaka Looking to Better Her Miami Record

For a player of the class of Osaka, it’s tough to reconcile with the fact her record at the Miami Open is as poor as it is. Her four appearances here have resulted in two third round ousters and a couple other second round exits so far, so this would be her chance to win and get to the fourth round here for the first time.

What’s also interesting to note is Osaka hasn’t lost a match on the tour since her defeat at the hands of Cori Gauff at the 2020 Australian Open!

Sure she has withdrawn from matches and not participated in too many tournaments in that period but a record of 22 victories in that time to zero defeats is worth talking about.

There have been occasions when she has been tested as well, with Garbine Muguruza nearly knocking her out at the Australian Open and more recently, Osaka needing to stretch against Ajla Tomljanovic in the second round here in Miami as well. However, she has found a way to win. Always.

Like against Tomljanovic, Osaka needed an hour and 47 minutes of court time, was broken twice and needed a tie-breaker in the opening set but every time she fell behind there was an almost predictable comeback she mounted.

Tough to see how an off-colour player ranked 95th in the world would change that winning record around.

Stojanovic One of Tw0 Qualifiers Still Remaining

Despite winning her first ever match at a Grand Slam main draw, it hasn’t been one of Stojanovic’s best seasons leading into this tournament but she seems to have turned things around with her performances so far whatever happens here on.

For a player who had never even qualified for a WTA 1000 event before Miami, to reach the third round of this competition has been a big turnaround. Two wins at the qualifying stage, which included one over Bethanie Mattek-Sands and then two in the main draw against Heather Watson but more vitally against a seeded player like Yulia Putintseva will go a long way in adding a few ranking points and oodles of confidence.

What makes the win over Putintseva even more special is Stojanovic was a set and 3-1 and 4-2 down after having frittered away four set-points in the opening sets. Most players would have capitulated and withered away but Stojanovic only fought back, staved off two match-points before clinching the equalising set.

And in the third, she stormed past Putintseva by taking a 4-0 lead and then closing out 6-2.

Can she continue with her dream run though?

Osaka v Stojanovic Prediction and Tip

Osaka is 1/10 to win this which aren’t worth going for but what could be looked at are the games handicap odds. Stojanovic looks to be someone who would put up a solid fight given her momentum and +6.5 games looks definitely worth a go.

Tip: Games Handicap Stojanovic +6.5: 4/5 (bet365)
