Egor Gerasimov v Aljaz Bedene Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and that came in this very season at the Montpellier Open. Gerasimov won that round of 16 encounter in a difficult, two-setter.

Gerasimov Tames Pella in Opener

In less than an hour and a half, Gerasimov overcame Argentine player Guido Pella in his opener to make it to the second. While Pella fought hard in the opening set, with Gerasimov getting broken twice as well, it was the decisive break in the 10th game of the set that turned the tide.

With the opening set pouched, Gerasimov raced through the second, breaking his opponent thrice and himself facing no break-points, registering a 6-4, 6-0 victory. It was his first ever in the main draw of a clay court event.

Incidentally this win also comes on the back of three defeats in four matches for Gerasimov, who lost in the openers of two of the last three tournaments he played. Interestingly, it comes on a surface which is his least favourite and against a player who loves playing on clay, making it a confidence-booster to the hilt.

Bedene Scrapes Through 313th-Ranked Player

Giulio Zeppieri is just 19 years of age but ranked 313th in the world, not too many would have given him much of a chance against Bedene. The bookmakers definitely did not, with Bedene going in at 3/10 to win it to his unheralded opponent starting out at 5/2.

Nearly two and a half hours later, Bedene would have considered himself lucky to have gotten out with a win, defeating the 19-year-old 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2) after having fallen a break down in the final set.

It took Bedene two break-points in the seventh game to claw back to level pegging, and he then had to save another break-point in the eighth to keep himself in the match. Fortunately for Bedene, his experience shone through in the tie-breaker and once he got the upper-hand at 3-2, there was no looking back.

As performances on clay go, Bedene is a much more pedigreed player than Gerasimov, having reached the third round at Roland-Garros last season as well. Can he shrug this opening performance off as down to rustiness?

Gerasimov v Bedene Prediction and Tip

Gerasimov might have dished out a solid opening performance but we are looking at Bedene to come through this one thanks to his experience on clay.

Tip: Bede to win: 10/11 (bet365)
