Pliskova Bounces Back against Gauff

There weren’t too many doubts about the manner in which Pliskova’s first round match was going to go against American teenage talent Cori Gauff.

It was Pliskova’s experience as a top-10 player but lack of form against Gauff’s budding talent that has seen her excel on the tour already and a fighting three-setter is what we had expected. That’s what actually happened.

Gauff got the early lead at 3-1, failed to serve for the set at 5-4 but then broke Pliskova again to carve out the opening set. The second set saw Gauff with the advantage too, but she frittered away four break-points before Pliskova broke her in the sixth game and carried that through to level the match.

And once Pliskova had gained that confidence, she used it to her advantage to rattle off successive breaks in the third set, taking a 4-0 lead. Gauff did get one back but Pliskova then broke again and served it out to clinch her place in round two.

The Czech had earlier made it to the Stuttgart Open quarterfinals, her first three matches on clay this season.

Pavlyuchenkova Keys in the Right Combo

It has been a forgettable start to the season for Pavlyuchenkova but a first round win over Madison Keys will do her confidence a world of good.

Losing eight of her 13 matches this year looked to have pushed the former world number 13 back, but she would have known some of those losses had come against the top players on the WTA circuit. Coming up against a struggling Keys, Pavlyuchenkova got her basics right and found a way to beat the world number 23.

In a match lasting an hour and 29 minutes, Pavlyuchenkova was broken only once when Keys came back to level the opening set 3-3 but from that point onward it was advantage Russian all the way through.

Pavlyuchenkova broke in the 11th game of the opening set, served out for the set in the next game before racing to a 4-0 lead in the second. And once she had saved three break-points in the fifth game, there was no looking back as Pavlyuchenkova completed a 7-5, 6-2 victory.

Can she now test Pliskova?

Pliskova v Pavlyuchenkova Prediction and Tip

Pliskova starts off a 4/9 favourite to win this while she is 1/1 to make it a straight-set win. Backing a Pliskova win but could see Pavlyuchenkova carve out a set.
