Daniil Medvedev v Alexander Bublik  Head to Head

Medvedev has won both their meetings, in St Petersburg in 2016 and at the French Open opening round last month.

Medvedev Disappointed With Wimbledon Progress, But Buoyed By Bublik Encounter

After a successful end to 2020 and a strong start to 2021 Down Under, Daniil Medvedev had a bout of Covid-19 that kept him out of the early portion of the clay court season. When he returned to the clay swing, it was a dismal run at both Madrid and Rome for the world number two as he headed to Roland Garros stating that clay was not a surface he enjoyed playing on.

It was a surprisingly good run for Medvedev at the French Open, where got his act together making the quarter-finals dropping only one set and looking in good touch and happy with his groundstrokes and game. Although Medvedev lost out to eventual runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarters, all things taken into consideration it was a good run at the clay slam for the Russian.

A disappointing first round loss at the ATP 500 in Halle against Jan-Lennard Struff marked the start of the grass swing for Medvedev, and thus the Russian decided to play this week in Mallorca the week before Wimbledon. It was a fruitful week for the Russian at Mallorca this week as he not only had some useful grass court match practice, but also won the title.

While Medvedev will be pleased with how Wimbledon panned out with his recovery to beat former major champion Marin Cilic in the third round, he will be disappointed at his loss against Hubert Hurkacz in the semi-finals after letting go of a convincing two set to one lead before the overnight rain postponement.

A natural on the hard courts, Medvedev will be looking for a good run here ahead of the North American hard court tour.

Uncanny Bublik Looking To Create Upset

Top seed and World No. 37 Alexander Bublik came to Newport last week with a 24-17 record in 2021, primed for a strong run. He was coming of his best-ever Wimbledon showing, having reached the third round for the first time, by beating Mikhail Kukushkin and Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets but was blown away by Hubert Hurkacz in the Round of 32.

He was  a finalist at Newport in 2019 losing out to John Isner for the title and believed to push it one better this time around. However, he fell short in the semi-finals at the hands of South African veteran and eventual title holder Kevin Anderson.

Yet to win a title on the tour, Bublik has four runner-up finishes, two of which came at the start of this year. He  reached the final in Antalya, defeating Matteo Berrettini en route but had to withdraw with an injury after just two games in the final, handing the title to Australia’s Alex de Minuar. The Kazakh was also a finalist in Singapore losing to Aussie Alexei Popyrin in the decider.

Bublik will be looking for a good run here ahead of the hard court season and hoping his uncharacteristic playing style can pull off the upset against the number two seed in the first round.

Medvedev v Bublik Prediction and Tip

In a repeat of the Roland Garros opener, Medvedev starts as a strong favorite but one cannot discount the likes of Bublik. It will be down to the given day and the big points but expect the Russian to prevail in two tight sets.
