Alexander Zverev Withdraws from 2019 Rotterdam Open

Is The Next Gen The Lost Gen When It Comes to The Majors

Germany’s Alexander Zverev has decided to withdraw from the ATP Rotterdam Open as a result of an ankle injury. He becomes the second high-profile casualty from the Rotterdam Open after Grigor Dimitrov.

Zverev, who is ranked third in the world despite his early exit at the Australian Open, was supposed to be the top seed at the Rotterdam Open. He will now be replaced Damir Dzumhur in the main draw while Kei Nishikori, ranked seventh on the ATP charts, will now be the top seed.

The German, who now has Ivn Lendl on his coaching staff, was ousted in the fourth round at the Australian Open by an aggressive Milos Raonic. This was the 14th time in 15 Grand Slam main draw appearances that Zverev had failed to make the last eight stage.

This also means Tomas Berdych has been awarded the wild-card into the competition and he will travel from the ongoing Montpellier Open to feature in the ATP Rotterdam.

Bulgaria’s Dimitrov was earlier replaced by Martin Klizan while Kyle Edmund and Richard Gasquet have also decided to not take part in the tournament. Jeremy Chardy and Matthew Ebden take their spots in the main draw.

The Rotterdam Open will be played from February 11 and is a part of the ATP 500 circuit, in its 46th edition. Roger Federer, the defending champion, won’t be participating in the tournament either, having won the 2018 title by beating Dimitrov in the final.

Marin Cilic, Karen Khachanov, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Milos Raonic, Daniil Medvedev and Roberto Bautista-Agut are the other seeded players in the competition for this year’s edition.
