This is the sole international tennis event in the country, which makes it a special one and can’t be missed.

Given its close proximity to the Australian Open, the ASB Classic Auckland Open is an important tournament in the men’s calendar as it helps players even out the edges before the Grand Slam.

Some of the top players who participated in this competition last year include John Isner, David Ferrer, Jack Sock, Steve Johnson and a few others.

Having a great run here can not only boost the confidence of the players but it can also give them the necessary tips to improve their game at the start of the season.

2023 ATP Auckland Open Schedule & Dates

What Happened at the 2022 ATP Auckland Open?

The 2021 edition of the Auckland Open was cancelled because of the pandemic and they opted not to host the 2022 edition of the tournament either.

Unseeded Frenchman Ugo Humbert lifted his maiden ATP title at the 2020 ATP Auckland Open by beating countryman and fifth seed Benoit Paire in a gruelling three-setter in the final. Earlier Humbert had overcome Denis Shapovalov and John Isner, the tournament’s second and fourth seeds on his way to the final.

Defending champion Roberto Bautista Agut did not take part in the competition in 2019 and the title was won by Tennys Sandgren.

Sandgren defeated Cameron Norrie in the final in straight sets to lift the trophy. It was an interesting match-up for the final with Sandgren having gone into the tournament as an unseeded player while Norrie was a wild-card entrant.

Before that, in 2018, Roberto Bautista Agut had won the title last year by beating Juan Martin del Potro in the final. He needed three sets to overcome the former US Open winner.

Interestingly, Bautista Agut had a rather tough semi-final match-up against Robin Haase, which he overcame after being a set down and in three tight tie-breakers. On the other hand, del Potro brushed aside the challenge of David Ferrer in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 to clinch his final berth.

Some of the other top players who were in action last season included Jack Sock, who was the top seed but lost in round two after a first round bye and Sam Querry and John Isner, both of whom met with the same fate.
