What Happened in the 2022 ATP Eastbourne International?
Third seeded Taylor Fritz needed a third set tie-breaker to overcome fellow American Maxime Cressy in the final of the tournament to lift the trophy. Fritz overcame the loss of the second set in a tie-breaker too to claim the win, with the score reading 6-2, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4).
After a first round bye, Fritz did not have a lot of problem against Thiago Monteiro in the second, before routing Alexander Bublik in the quarterfinal. In his last-four encounter, Fritz needed three sets to get past the defending champion Alex de Minaur.
This was Fritz’s second title at Eastoburne having also won the 2019 edition.
The second seeded Alex de Minaur won a gripping ATP Eastbourne 2021 final by defeating the Lorenzo Sonego in a final set tie-breaker. De Minaur won 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) to clinch the trophy.
Interestingly both de Minaur and Sonego were left to play lucky losers in the semifinal, with the Aussie overcoming Kwon Soon-woo and Sonego defeating Max Purcell in their respective matches.
The 2020 edition of the ATP Eastbourne International was cancelled due to the global pandemic.
In 2019, after defending champion Mischa Zverev pulled out of the tournament, it turned out to be an all-American final in which Taylor Fritz defeated Sam Querrey to lift the title. He won 6-3, 6-4. Earlier, Fritz had got past the third seeded Kyle Edmund and Querrey overcame Thomas Fabbiano in their respective semifinals to make it to the title-decider.
Top seeded Guido Pella, second seeded Laslo Djere and fourth seeded Dusan Lajovic had all received first round byes but were knocked out in the second round.
