What Happened at the 2022 Stuttgart Open?

Second seeded Matteo Berrettini overcame Andy Murray in the final of the 2022 Stuttgart Open to lift the trophy, clinching the title-decider 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. It was Murray’s second ATP final appearance of the season.

Berrettini, after a first round bye, scraped past qualifier Radu Albot, before needing three sets against fellow Italian player Lorenzo Sonego in the quarterfinals. Later he needed two tie-breakers in his semifinal match against Oscar Otte.

Murray shocked the top seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas and edged past Nick Kyrgios in the semifinals.

Marin Cilic won the 2021 Stuttgart Open title with a straight-set win over Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final.

The Croat, who was unseeded in the competition defeated the fifth seeded Nikoloz Basilashvili and top seeded Denis Shapovalov en route the title-decider.

The 2020 edition of the men’s Stuttgart Open was cancelled because of the pandemic.

As mentioned earlier, defending champion Roger Federer chose not to take part in this 2019 season of the tournament.

Interestingly, all the top five seeds, Zverev, Khachanov, Medvedev, Basilashvili and Monfils were knocked out of the Stuttgart Open in the second round, leaving unseeded Matteo Berrettini to take on the seventh seeded Auger-Aliassime in the final. Berrettini won the title 6-4, 7-6 to push forward in the year which saw him qualify for the ATP Finals for the first time ever.
