What Happened at the 2022 WTA Dubai?

In what turned out to be a surprise, all-unseeded affair, Jelena Ostapenko crushed Veronika Kudermetova to lift the trophy. Ostapenko won 6-0, 6-4.

Rather interestingly, none of the seeded players made it as far as the semifinals either, while Ons Jabeur was the only seed to enter the last eight in the 2022 edition!

After defending champion Simona Halep opted not to take part of the 2021 WTA Dubai competition, it was Garbine Muguruza who won the title. Muguruza was a 7–6 (6), 6–3 winner over Barbora Krejcikova in the final.

Muguruza’s only set loss came at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals.

Simona Halep added to her collection of titles at the highest level as she overcame Elena Rybakina in the 2020 final after losing the first set. She scooped up the final 3–6, 6–3, 7–6 (5), after having saved a match-point in her second round match against Ons Jabeur.

What was so special about this tournament was it saw Kim Clijsters return to competitive tennis for the first time in nearly eight years. She fell fighting against Garbiñe Muguruza in her opener.

Played as a Premier 5 tournament in 2019, it was Belinda Bencic who claimed the trophy by defeating Petra Kvitova in the final. Bencic had earlier faced six match-points against Aryna Sabalenka in the third round.

The 2018 competition was won by the Ukrainian No. 1 Elina Svitolina, who defeated Daria Kasatkina in the final with 6-4, 6-0. She started the competition as the defending champion and successfully managed to defend her title.

Speaking of Kasatkina, the young Russian had a pretty remarkable stint in Dubai herself. In her semifinal fixture against Garbine Muguruza, she faced multiple match points to see herself through to the final.

It was a remarkable three-set affair that led to the exit of the second-seeded Spaniard with 3-6, 7-6(11), 6-1. Kasatkina produced a similar result in her second round fixture against Johanna Konta as well.

Other top players who participated in the competition were Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova. The two ladies moved on to meet in the quarterfinal – an eventful tie that was ultimately won by Kerber. However, the German faced Svitolina in the semifinal and lost that match in straight sets.

Apart from them, the likes of Naomi Osaka, Agnieszka Radwanska, Jelena Ostapenko, and Carla Suarez Navarro also featured in the tournament.
