What happened at the 2022 ATP Swedish Open?

Surprise Argentine finalist Francisco Cerundolo overcame the eighth seeded Sebastian Baez in the title-decider 7-6 (4), 6-2 to clinch his first ever title on the ATP circuit.

Cerundolo had earlier sent the top seeded Casper Ruud packing in the second round after having gotten past Joao Sousa in the first. He would then overcome Aslan Karatsev before reducing Pablo Carreno Busta to the sidelines in the semifinal to make it to the final.

South Africa’s Kevin Anderson won the Swedish Open title in 2021, by beating American player Jenson Brooksby in the final. He won 7-6 (8), 6-4.

Brooksby had earlier sent out the top seeded Alexander Bublik in the semifinal while Brooksby surprised the seventh seeded Jordan Thompson.

The 2020 edition of the ATP Bastad was called off following the coronavirus pandemic.

This was after Nicholas Jarry won the 2019 title by beating the sixth seeded Juan Iganacio Londero of Argentina in the final. Jarry had earlier overcome another Argentine Federico Delbonis while Londero came through against Albert Ramos Vinolas in the semifinals.

The 2018 edition of the Swedish Open was won by Fabio Fognini who opted not to take part in the 2019 edition. In his absence, Fabio Fognini went on to win the title by beating Juan Ignacio Londero in the final, winning in two tough sets.

Apart from Jarry and Londero, Richard Gasquet and Sousa were the other quarterfinalists. Neither made it to the semifinal though as Federico Delbonis and Albert Ramos Vinolas were the other losing semifinalists in the tournament.
