Belinda Bencic v Bianca Andreescu Head to Head

The two young players have never met on the tour before.

Andreescu Extends her Winning Streak

At just 19 years of age, Bianca Andreescu has become one of the youngest players to reach the semifinal of a Grand Slam, especially at the Flushing Meadows. Her exponential rise to the top can only be described by a series of adjectives that cover the broad definitions of unbelievable and incredible.

Now on a 11-match winning streak, Andreescu’s last defeat on the tour came back in February. Her win-loss tally, following her run in New York, now stands at 43-4 – numbers which were once matched only by the likes of Serena Williams and other prominent giants.

With a couple of major titles already to her name – the Indian Wells Open and Canadian Open, it was only a matter of time for the young Canadian to add another feather to her cap. What makes her rise a lot more interesting is that she took an injury break to treat her ailing shoulder, missed the entire grass swing and a majority of clay swing, and came back to the tour like nothing changed.

Andreescu continued her dream in the US Open too, dispatching the likes of Kirsten Flipkens, Caroline Wozniacki, Taylor Townsend, and Elise Mertens. Against the latter two, she faced some resistance and showed first signs of crack, but in a display of brilliance and maturity, the Canadian dealt with the threat handsomely.

Having started the year outside of top 150, she now finds herself on the cusp of an entry into the 10 – a meteoric rise led by her aggressive, hard-hitting style of play. Now, she faces an opponent who is quite similar to herself.

Bencic, in her Maiden Grand Slam Semifinal

Just like Andreescu, the 22-year-old Belinda Bencic too, has had a season to be proud of. After ending her title drought of over three years, the Swiss finally has had a sensational resurgence on the WTA Tour. Back in the top 20, it is more than definite that she is here to stay.

Her dream run is far more cinematic than her Canadian adversary’s. Starting with fairly comfortable wins over Mandy Minella and Alize Cornet, she got a walkover against Anett Kontaveit in the third round. With an extra day of rest, she faced Naomi Osaka in the fourth round and sauntered past the defending champion with 7-5, 6-4.

That was the biggest upset of the tournament and the confidence boost Bencic received from that game set her up for the ultimate glory. In the quarterfinal, she knocked out Donna Vekic of Croatia.

Earlier this season, World No. 12 won the WTA Dubai title and reached the final in Mallorca. While she hasn’t been as clinical as Andreescu on the whole, she is still fairly more experienced and knows what it feels like to be under the spotlight at such a young age.

Bencic v Andreescu Tips & Predictions

The stakes here are very high as the two players are eyeing the final berth. Both of them have practised together and know their opponents to a certain extent. What will matter here is grit, endurance, and the desire to win. Having already defeated a series of top 10 players in their impressive careers so far, Bencic and Andreescu are clearly in a league of their own, unmatched by many. All in all, this will be a US Open semifinal for the history books.

Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 17/20 (888Sport)
