Karolina Pliskova v Polona Hercog Head to Head

This will be the sixth meeting between Pliskova and Hercog with the last match having been played in Tianjin last year. Pliskova had won that in straight sets, dropping just three games. The other matches were held on hard court surfaces too, with Hercog’s only win having come in 2014 in Beijing.

Karolina Pliskova Rises to Number Two in the World

Despite a fourth round ouster at the hands of Johanna Konta, Pliskova has managed to climb up to number two in the world following the loss of points for the likes of Simona Halep and Naomi Osaka.

Three title wins have helped too but it’s been a while since she won a tournament on hard courts – that had happened at the start of the year, in her first competition of 2019 in Brisbane. Since then the wins have been on clay and grass and having entered this tournament as the top seed, she would like to get back to her winning ways.

After a first round bye, Pliskova gets her first chance to get going when she takes on Hercog, and on paper this should be a no-contest. Not too many players outside the top 50 have been able to challenge Pliskova this year, with Karolina Muchova being one who had defeated the Czech apart from Kateryna Kozlova.

Hercog Eases into Second Round

Hercog’s first round opponent was Meiling Wang, a 650th-ranked Chinese teenager and should have probably beaten her more comfortably than the 6-3, 6-4 she eventually did. That said, Hercog can be a dangerous customer at times, as was on display in Lugano where she won the title earlier this year – her first since 2012.

The trouble for Hercog is her record on hard court surfaces is an unenviable one – in the previous four years she has played 56 matches on the surface and lost 35 of them. And while she has overcome Pliskova once in their career, those were her heyday, her performances have tapered off, of late, having entered this tournament on the back of three successive defeats.

Stunningly, in main draws of the outdoor hard court competitions this year, Hercog has won just two matches, not a record that will inspire any confidence going into this encounter.

Pliskova v Hercog Tips & Predictions

Pliskova will be a heavy favourite to not just win this one but to do that in straight sets and with much ease. Not expecting the world number two to drop more than six games in this encounter.

Tip: Pliskova to win in two sets: 4/7 (888Sport)
