Osaka, in With a Decent Run
After losing her bearings in the mid-season for a brief period, notably in the French Open and grass swing where she lost in the early rounds, Naomi Osaka found her groove back in the US Open Series.
Despite losing her No. 1 ranking, it has been a good learning experience for the Australian Open champion, who has truly evolved and matured as a player. She reached the quarterfinal in Toronto and Cincinnati while in the US Open, she made it as far as the fourth round before falling to Belinda Bencic.
These defeats have helped Osaka in a lot of ways as now, she looks to cement her position in the Asian swing. Playing at a tournament which marked the first WTA final of her career, the Japanese will be eager to maintain that close bond. Last year too, she reached the final where she fell to Karolina Pliskova.
This time around, she is enjoying a bye into the second round and with a win-loss tally of 29-11 and the support of the local crowd, she is a prime favourite to go the distance.

Tomova, With an Opportunity of a Lifetime
The 24-year-old Bulgarian has spent the majority of her season on the ITF circuit. Currently ranked in the 180s, she has had little success there and has lost mostly in the early rounds.
Among the highlights include her winning run in the ITF Biarritz and reaching the first round in the WTA Hiroshima last week. As for her current run in Osaka, she fought her way through the qualifiers and in the opener, she moved past Alize Cornet in three sets. This also marks her best performance in a WTA event this year.
Osaka v Tomova Tips & Predictions
This will be a difficult match for Tomova. She is facing an opponent who has been in a commanding form for most of the season at a place where she was born. It will be a big psychological hurdle to overcome but it’s not impossible. Expect the Japanese to face some resistance but she should get through this, unscathed.
