Samantha Stosur v Viktorija Golubic Preview

This will be the very first time that Samantha Stosur and Viktorija Golubic will be meeting and it comes in the semi-final of the Guangzhou Open. And it’s been a shock result for Stosur by a long stretch.

The former US Open champion had fallen so far down the rankings – she is 129th now – that she needed a wildcard to make the US Open this year and lost in round one. And her tumble in the rankings can also be gauged from the fact that since making it to the 2016 French Open semi-final, she has entered the last-four stage of any WTA tournament just thrice including this one.

26-year-old Golubic surprised Shuai Zhang to make the semi-final here, which has been her best showing for the year. It helps that hard court surfaces are her favourite, having won a title at the Indian Wells Challenger earlier this year, but this is the first time in the season she has gone this distance at a higher-level tournament.

Looks like a match of equals despite Golubic starting out as a bookmakers’ favourite.

Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 61/50 with Unibet

Sofia Kenin v Anna Blinkova Preview

Third seeded Sofia Kenin will be up against Anna Blinkova in the semi-final in what will be their first meeting. And the world number 20 shouldn’t have too many issues getting past the Russian 21-year-old. Well, unless of course she can lift her game from her already elevated levels of the past couple of weeks.

Yep, Blinkova has been in the form of her life since she was knocked out of the US Open in the first round by Naomi Osaka. She went on to win the title at New Haven after that and then has won three matches in this tournament to make it eight wins in a row.

The Russian crushed Marie Bouzkova 6-3, 6-1 in her quarter-final to give herself a solid chance against Kenin despite the obvious difference in their rankings. That’s not to say that Kenin’s been resting on her laurels, because she has been consistently reaching the latter stages of competitions.

There was a semi-final in Toronto and Cincinnati, a third round at the US Open and quarter-final last week at Zhengzhou before this last-four appearance here in Guangzhou. All of this is building up nicely for her appearance at the Wuhan Open next week where she is a seeded player too.

Tip: Kenin to win in straight sets: 10/11 with Unibet
