Naomi Osaka v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head

The two players have met only once on the tour, back in the 2017 WTA Hong Kong. Back then, it was the Russian who tamed the young Japanese player in the quarterfinal in straight sets.

Osaka Finds her Momentum in Style

Playing in her hometown as the overwhelming favourite and local hero, Naomi Osaka rallied to her first singles final on the tour since the Australian Open earlier this season. It has been a phenomenal performance by the 21-year-old, who survived manic Saturday and won two matches in a matter of hours to reach the final.

Starting as the top seed, she enjoyed a bye into the second round where she met Viktoriya Tomova. After dispatching her in straight sets, she moved past Yulia Putintseva and Elise Mertens, back to back on Saturday after rain stopped the play the day before. Impressively, she won both of these matches in straight sets without as much as batting an eye.

While Osaka’s form has dipped marginally over the last few months, she has still managed to retain her position in the top five. She is clearly growing as a player with every defeat and this home run in Osaka proves just that. She had a mediocre run in the US Open series where she reached the quarterfinal in Toronto and Cincinnati. However, following this breakthrough in Japan, she looks primed to get back to her winning ways.

Pavlyuchenkova, with her Best Performance

With a win-loss tally of 13-17, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova hasn’t had the best of the time on the tour this year. The 28-year-old has spent a majority of season in futile attempts to move past the early rounds.

Similar to Osaka, this marks the first time that Pavlyuchenkova has had a major breakthrough for the first time since the Australian Open. On her way to the final, she delivered a couple of interesting, stunning results. For instance, in the second round, she dispatched the number two seed Kiki Bertens in straight sets and a match later, she delivered a similar result by knocking out Angelique Kerber.

Having defeated two top 10 players in the same week, the Russian will be sailing high on confidence. Her battles with inconsistencies have come to an end, at least for the time being as she will now compete in her first singles final since the Strasbourg Open last season.

Osaka v Pavlyuchenkova Tips & Predictions

People say that the third time is a charm and it will be interesting to see if it will be the case for Osaka. As for Pavlyuchenkova, she holds good cards here – two major wins this week, a great deal of experience, and a 1-0 lead over her opponent in the final. All in all, this will be a cracker of a final in Osaka.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 10/13 (888Sport)
