Simona Halep v Barbora Strycova Head to Head
Halep leads Strycova by 5-1, and has defeated her in their last five meetings on the WTA Tour in straight sets. They last met in the Indian Wells Open earlier this season, where Halep won 6-2, 6-4.
Halep, Hoping for a Good Run in Asia
Simona Halep has had quite an interesting year so far – from experimenting with different coaches to playing without one in different tournaments, it has been a year where the Romanian has evolved as a player by going through slumps and rough streaks.
Halep reached the final in the Qatar Open and Madrid Open before finally winning the title at the SW19 – the famed Wimbledon. With these kinds of performances, the number four seed also reached the penultimate rounds in a few other tournaments – the Miami Open semifinal, and the quarterfinal in the French Open and WTA Eastbourne.
Her US Open swing, however, wasn’t this eventful. She fell in the second round in New York to Taylor Townsend while in Toronto and Cincinnati, she never made it past the fourth round.

Strycova, Seeking Inspiration from her Doubles No. 1 Ranking
Currently ranked World No. 1 on the doubles circuit, Barbora Strycova has established herself as quite a player in that niche. She has won four such titles this year with Su-Wei Hsieh, including the Madrid Open and Wimbledon.
But as a singles player, she hasn’t had this grand of a time on the tour as her win-loss tally currently stands at 19-19. Since her semifinal run at the Wimbledon – her single best performance of the year where she defeated Kiki Bertens, Elise Mertens, and Johanna Konta, Strycova hasn’t made it past the opening rounds.
Case in point, she fell in the qualifiers in Cincinnati and in the Bronx Open and US Open, the Czech lost in the first round itself. Strycova had a much better time at the start of the year, when she reached the semifinal in Istanbul and Prague.

Halep will start this game as the favourite although, she will need to be wary of the threat that Strycova possesses. The Czech, albeit inconsistent, has proven herself to be a capable player who can take on the top 10 players on equal footing. Expect the two players to put up a show with some quality tennis here.
