Caroline Garcia v Wang Yafan Predictions & Preview

This will be the second time that Caroline Garcia and Wang Yafan will be meeting on the WTA circuit and in their previous meeting the French world number 31 had come away trumps in a tough three-setter. That was last year in Beijing, an opening round match on a hard court surface. They meet again in the same country and on the same surface.

That Garcia came through in her opener against Anastasia Potapova would have come as a surprise and relief for her. She was down a set and with a 7-14 win-loss record, there was every chance she was staring at another defeat. A top quality showing in the next two sets followed and won her that match. It might not be as easy against Yafan though.

Yafan is at her career-best ranking of 47th in the world, inching forward with a 22-14 win-loss record on hard court surfaces that includes a win over Lauren Davis in the first round here. Earlier, she had even made it to the semi-final at the Seoul Open and her power-packed play should prove to be too good for Garcia.

Yulia Putintseva v Samantha Stosur Predictions & Preview

36th-ranked Yulia Putintseva will take on Australia’s Samantha Stosur who is back into the top 100 of the WTA rankings in their second round match. And Putintseva almost didn’t make it here, needing 7-5 in the final set of her opening round against Astra Sharma to win that match.

What makes this interesting is Stosur herself has done well to get to the second round, but then again she needed a three-setter against an opponent ranked 649th in the world. That says a lot about the place at which her singles tennis is, that runner-up trophy at Guangzhou Open notwithstanding.

Stosur was 6-12 on win-loss apart from that solid showing in Guangzhou and with Putintseva having had not too much trouble getting past lower-ranked opponents most times, she starts a heavy favourite here. Should win in two comfortable sets.

Tip: Putintseve to win in straight sets: 13/10 with Unibet

Ons Jabeur v Xiyu Wang Predictions & Preview

This will be the first meeting between Ons Jabeur and Xiyu Wang and despite the large difference in their ranking, it could get interesting.

Jabeur, who had entered this tournament on the back of a few struggles, was a straight-set winner over Jennifer Brady in her opener while Wang defeated Kristie Ahn in a shock result. She had made it to the main draw of the tournament with three straight-set qualifying wins before winning that first rounder against Ahn 6-2, 7-6 to set up this meeting.

And the 18-year-old has seen enough spark in recent times to suggest she could even get the better of her opponent from Tunis.

Tip: Xiyu Wang to win: 11/8 with Unibet

Rebecca Peterson v Xinyu Wang Predictions & Preview

Xinyu Wang was ousted in the final round of qualifiers by Xiyu Wang but still qualified as a lucky loser and ended up beating Shuyue Ma in her opening round match here. And now she will take on Rebecca Peterson in her second round match.

It’s been a year to remember for Xinyu Wang, with the 18-year-old having qualified for the US Open, only her second career Grand Slam main draw entry. And for a player who was ranked as low as 326th in the first half of the year, and 765th last season, she has risen really quickly to 155th. Another couple of good performances could push her towards that elusive top 100 platform.

Peterson hasn’t been too disappointing herself, having won the title at Nanchang last month and with a 21-12 win-loss on hard court surfaces this season. And she enters this match on the back of a shock win over Venus Williams in three sets. She should have no worries getting past Wang either.

Tip: Peterson to win in straight sets: 8/13 with Unibet
