Rebecca Peterson v Heather Watson to Head

Peterson holds a 1-0 lead over Watson, last beating her in the Wuhan Open just a few weeks back with 6-2, 6-2.

Peterson, on a Roll in Asia

The 24-year-old Rebecca Peterson has worked pretty hard season and managed to achieve a win-loss tally of 33-23. With a series of early-round exits and struggles with form highlighting most of her year, there have been a couple of exceptions, most notably in the Asian Swing.

Up until arriving in Asia, the best she had achieved was a third round run in the Cincinnati Open as qualifier, where she fell to Karolina Pliskova. However, that wasn’t before she defeated the likes of Veronika Kudermetova and Johanna Konta. Then, a couple of weeks later in the Jiangxi Open in Nanchang, she reached her maiden WTA singles final on the tour and managed to go all the way in a triumphant display of quality and determination.

Peterson defeated Elena Rybakina in the final there with 6-2, 6-0 to win her maiden title of the season. Now, she is on the verge of building on that success with yet another title run in Tianjin. Between then and now, she reached the second round in the Wuhan Open.

As for her run in Tianjin, Rebecca Peterson has put up quite a performance. Starting with the heavy favourite Venus Williams in the opener, World No. 59 moved on to defeat a series of Chinese players like Xin Wang, Yafan Wang, and then the Tunisian Ons Jabeur.

First Final for Watson in Over Three Years

Heather Watson, currently ranked World No. 125, has spent her year alternating between WTA and ITF events. In the latter, she has enjoyed some success with a couple of title runs in Japan and Canada. However, on the WTA circuit, her form has been abysmal, to say the least. With a bunch of first-round losses marking most of her season, the 27-year-old clearly has had a season to forget.

Watson arrived in Tianjin with little to no chances of making it to the final. Yet, she finds herself competing in her fourth WTA final of the career; her first one since the Monterrey Open in 2016. Looking to end the title drought of over three seasons, the unseeded player has so far knocked out Kateryna Bondarenko, the number 2 seed Qiang Wang, Magda Linette, and Kudermetova in Tianjin.

Peterson v Watson Tips & Predictions

Expect three sets in this match. Given the way Peterson has performed in the tournament, it wouldn’t be surprising if she manages to win the title here. She has been in a superior form in comparison to the Brit and has had a better year on the whole.
