Frances Tiafoe v Jannik Sinner Predictions & Preview

Frances Tiafoe returns to the ATP Next Gen Finals for the second year and will be playing Italian Jannik Sinner. The two players met at the European Open in Antwerp a few weeks ago, with Sinner winning in a decider.

After a promising 2018, where he won his first ATP title at the Delray Beach Open, Tiafoe has not lived up to expectations this season. Apart from a quarterfinal showing at the Australian Open, 2019 has seen disappointing early losses for the American. Tiafoe will be hoping for a good run this week in Milan, setting himself up for a better 2020.

18-year-old Sinner began the year ranked outside the top 500 in the ATP rankings. Having had a successful run on the ATP Challenger Circuit, the Italian made the semi-finals of the ATP 250 at Antwerp defeating Gael Monfils en route. Sinner has moved to within the top 100 in the world after his first full year on the tour.

Expect a tight match on the cards, which will go down to who plays better on the given day. Expect Tiafoe to edge Sinner in a five setter.

Tip: Tiafoe to win in five sets.

Casper Ruud v Miomir Kekmanovic Predictions & Preview

This is the second meeting between the two players, with Kekmanovic winning in Zhuhai earlier this year during the Asian swing.

It has been a good year for Norwegian Casper Ruud who is ranked just outside the top 50 in the world. Ruud was a finalist to Cristain Garin in Houston and a semi-finalist at Rio and Kitzbuhel, in what was a consistent performance by him on clay. He will be looking for a good run here to end his year on a confident note.

Serbia’s Miomir Kekmanovic won his first ever ATP match this season and did well to be a finalist on the grass courts of Antalya and a semi-finalist at Indian Wells. His biggest scalp of the year was Alexander Zverev at the Cincinnati Masters, depicting his liking for the faster surfaces.

An exciting match on the cards, expect Kekmanovic to win in four sets.

Tip: Kekmanovic to win in four sets.

Ugo Humbert v Mikael Ymer Predictions & Preview

Frenchman Ugo Humbert plays Swede Mikael Ymer for the first time in his career on the opening day of the ATP Next Gen Finals.

It has been a strong year for Humbert, making the round of 16 at Wimbledon, and being a semi-finalist in Marseille and Antwerp defeating Borna Coric and David Goffin in either tournament. The Frenchman who broke into the top 100 in 2018, is now ranked number 46th in the world, and will look to move up closer to the more established ‘Next Gen’ members on the ATP Tour in 2020.

Swede Mikel Ymer has had a successful season on the ATP Challenger Circuit, playing five finals and winning four titles. He has moved into the top 75 of the ATP rankings, being ranked outside the top 200 a year ago. The young Swede also scalped Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga earlier this year on the Challenger Circuit.

Expect a well fought match between these two players, but Humbert has been in good form of late, and should win this encounter in four sets.

Tip: Humbert to win in four sets.

Alex de Minaur v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina

Pre-tournament favorite and 2018 runner-up Alex de Minaur opens his campaign against relatively unknown Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Aussie Alex de Minaur has come a long way since his finals appearance at this tournament, a year ago. He has reached four finals this year, winning titles at Sydney, Atlanta, Zhuhai and being runner-up to Roger Federer at Basel. Having moved up to number 23 in the world, young De Minaur looks to have set himself up for a promising career ahead.

World number 97 Alejandro Davidovich is best known for being the 2017 junior Wimbledon champion. His exploits this year have been largely on the ATP Challenger Circuit with two title wins.

Expect Aussie De Minaur to win his opening encounter in straight sets.

Tip: De Minaur to win in straight sets.
