Canada v Russia Predictions & Preview

Represented by members of ‘Next Gen’, Canada and Russia will meet in the first semi-final of the Davis Cup Finals.

Russia who were runner-ups in the group stages will be coming into the semi-final with plenty of confidence after a hard fought quarter-final against Serbia where they saved three match points to eventually prevail. In the absence of Russian number one Daniil Medvedev, the onus has been on Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov who have performed well thus far.

While Khachanov has not been in the best of form in singles, Rublev has performed exceptionally in singles, and has paired up well with Khachanov to come out strong in the doubles as well.

The Canadian team led by young Denis Shapovalov and resurgent Vasik Pospisil have also been in good form topping their group, defeating the USA and Italy, and following it up with a close win against Australia in the quarter-finals. Pospisil returning to tennis this year after a long injury lay-off has gone from strength to strength and looked in fine touch for most of the week.

Moving to a career-high number 15 in the ATP rankings, Shapovalov has displayed exuberance and confidence, and despite a close loss to Alex de Minaur , will be ready to go once the action begins.

Given the form Rublev has been in, one can expect him to win his encounter (most likely against Pospisil), leaving the possible clash between Shapovalov and Khachanov, with Shapovalov inching past his fellow ‘Next Gen’. An intriguing doubles will likely decide the winner of the tie, with the Rublev-Khachano duo looking better every match and possibly taking Russia to the Davis Cup finals

Great Britain v Spain Predictions & Preview

Hosts Spain, led by world number one Rafael Nadal continued their strong run in the tournament defeating Argentina in a tightly fought quarter-final. Spain will face ten time Davis Cup champions Great Britain who convincingly defeated Germany in their quarter-final encounter.

Nadal has been in ominous form winning all his singles matches thus far, and has also stepped in to play doubles as and when needed; non more important than his crucial doubles win in the decider against the Arengtines. With Roberto Bautista Agut who played a crucial role with the other singles match, having to leave due to the demise of his father, Pabloe Carreno Busta has stepped in and replaced Agut.

Although Carreno Busta lost closely to Guido Pella in the quarter-final, he remains a force and should strive in the latter stages of the tournament.  Doubles duties have been split between Feliciano Lopez, Marcelo Granollers and Nadal himself.

Solid performances by Jamie Murray and his doubles partner Neal Skupski had made up in both group matches for British number one Dan Evans, who was still searching for his first win of the week.

After a stellar performance by Britain’s Kyle Edmund to defeat Mikhail Kukushkin, British captain Leon Smith placed faith on Edmund and Evans with former world number one Andy Murray ( who has looked labored and fatigued) once again rested for the crucial quarter-final against Germany.

Both Evans and Edmund came through with victories over Phillip Kohlschreiber and Jan-Lennard Struff respectively to advance Great Britain to the semi-finals.

Given the form that he has been in, one can expect Nadal to emerge victorious against Evans or Edmnud whichever is his opponent, with a close match-up for Carreno Busta against either of the British singles players including Andy Murray.

Although the doubles match up is pretty tight, one may just see the combination of Nadal/Lopez/Granollers (whichever is the doubles pair) with the support of the Madrid fans, edge out the experienced Jamie Murray and his partner. Expect Spain to qualify for the Davis Cup finals by a whisker.
