Naomi Osaka v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head

This will be the fifth match between Osaka and Kontaveit and the Japanese, former US Open winner has won all four times. One other match was to be played at the Stuttgart Open last year but Osaka withdrew from that encounter. They had played as recently as the Cincinnati Open last week when Osaka had come back from a set down to win that quarterfinal in three sets.

Osaka Required to Stretch Past Kostyuk

18-year-old Marta Kostyuk had made the third round of the Australian Open in 2016 as a 15-year-old and facing up to Osaka in this third round match, she showed no signs of fear.

Osaka might have run off with the first set in a hurry, breaking her opponent twice, and then had six break-points in the fourth game of the second set but her opponent fought back to not just hold serve but also take the set to a tie-breaker and win it.

It’s where Osaka’s experience came handy. In the third set, it was all one-way traffic for the Japanese number one as she broke her opponent a couple of times to take it 6-2 and progress to the fourth round.

It must be said it’s not been plain sailing for Osaka in this tournament, not by any stretch but she has brought about different layers of her game and found a way to win. Like it happened in the first round against fellow Japanese player Misaki Doi.

Also, to win against Osaka, one will need to show continuing brilliance and stubbornness to break her resolve – and that’s going to be a tough ask.

Kontaveit Aiming for Revenge

The form is with Kontaveit, who is in her third tournament since returning from the pandemic break and holds a 10-2 win-loss record, spread across two different surfaces. At the US Open, she needed to come back from a set down in her opening round against Danielle Collins but since then has won six sets in a row.

And very easily at that too.

It started with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Collins, then a 6-4, 6-1 against Kaja Juvan and in the third round, faced with a opponent of reasonable strength, Kontaveit registered a 6-3, 6-2 win over Magda Linette.

Osaka will be a different kettle of fish but Kontaveit has shown what she is capable of, even against the former world number one. She has the weapons to stop Osaka on her track but all of them have to fire consistently on the same day.

Osaka v Kontaveit Prediction & Tip

Osaka is 1/2 to win this and while Kontaveit had stretched her to three sets the last time they met, it might not have too much of a bearing in this one. The Japanese player, if fit, should take this one.
