In a little over an hour, Osaka registered a 6-2, 6-2 win over Hsieh, breaking her twice in each of the sets. Such was Osaka’s dominance in the match, she faced a mere three break-points and saved all of them, also hammering seven aces and 24 winners to crash Hsieh’s party.

It was Hsieh’s first appearance in a Grand Slam quarterfinal, in a career that has lasted nearly two decades and she was severely hampered by her returns, winning a mere two points on Osaka’s first serve.

Broken in the very second game of the opening set, Hsieh had no chance of meting out the same treatment to Osaka all set, before she served to stay in the set at 2-5. Osaka got three more chances to break and she did just that off the third to complete the set in 37 minutes.

Something similar repeated in the second set too, with Osaka needing just 31 minutes this time to complete the two breaks of serve including one when her opponent was serving to stay in the encounter.

Osaka will now play the winner of the match between Serena Williams and Simona Halep which will be hosted at the Rod Laver Arena later in the day.
