Kenin with an Ordinary Run in Australia

While she began the season with bit of a solid run at the Abu Dhabi Open, the former Australian Open winner and French Open runnerup Kenin did not have the greatest time in Australia.

Fitness was an obvious concern but she would have loved to make a better fist of defending her Australian Open title as she fell in the second round of that competition to Kaia Kanepi in straight sets.

Earlier, following a first round bye at the Yarra Valley Classic, Kenin had fallen in the quarterfinal of that tournament to Garbine Muguruza by a 6-2, 6-2 scoreline. Ending her run in Australia was a stunning three-set defeat at the hands of Olivia Gadecki, an 18-year-old Aussie in the opening round of the Phillip Island Trophy, making it four losses from 10 matches for the American.

What the five-time WTA winner will hope for is a bit of a turnaround but this isn’t a competition she has done too well at, with ousters in the third and second round respectively of the two times she has played here. Can she undo that poor statistic this time around?

Petkovic Easy Winner over Zhang

There wasn’t much to choose between the two players, Petkovic and Shuai Zhang when they met in their opening round encounter and it was the German veteran who came through in the end in straight sets to seal her second round meeting with Kenin.

It was only Petkovic’s second win of the season having entered this tournament on the back of a three-match losing streak dating back to the start of the Australian swing. She had won the opening round of the Gippsland Trophy there before falling to Elina Svitolina and then lost to Ons Jabeur and Anna Blinkova in the next two matches.

Here, she shrugged off a late fightback from Zhang in the first set to register a 7-5, 6-1 victory. Petkovic first blew away a 4-0 lead in the opening set, only to break her opponent at 6-5 to win the set.

In the second, Petkovic had three match-points on Zhang’s serve before converting the second on her own.

Petkovic is herself on bit of a comeback trail and playing the world number four won’t be an easy one for her.

Kenin v Petkovic Prediction and Tip

Kenin starts off at 8/15 to scoop this one and we believe those are quite decent odds for the American to win this. Going with a Kenin win here.

Tip: Kenin to win: 8/15 (bet365)
