Anisimova Hoping to Better Form, Miami Record

Since winning her first title on the WTA circuit in Bogota in 2019 and then making it to the semifinal at the French Open that year, Anisimova’s form has seen a drastic dip. She has barely won anything but more vitally, she has suffered fitness issues and personal problems that have made recovery even more difficult.

As a result Anisimova comes into this tournament with a lacklustre form under her belt in 2021.

The American has played in two tournaments, including one at the ITF level and done nothing of note. In Orlando, she won her opener in a tough three-setter against Robin Montgomery but then had to retire from her second round encounter.

This was followed by Anisimova participating in her only WTA event of the season before her Miami campaign and it came in Dubai. Anisimova overcame Croatia’s Ana Konjuh, another player coming back on to the tour after an extended spell on the sidelines, but then in the second round was crushed by Garbine Muguruza.

Can she kick-start her time in Miami with a top-performance-emulating victory?

2018 Winner Stephens Scrapes Through

It took Stephens two hours and 34 minutes to get past her first round opponent, Oceane Dodin as the American showed the kind of fight in her game that had been missing for a whole now.

Stephens lost the first set in a tie-breaker from being 4-2 up at one stage but that didn’t deter her over the next two as she came through 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-2 to make it to the second round.

In fact, in the second set, Stephens twice held a service advantage only to be broken back the very next game. It was finally in the ninth game of the second set that she broke again and then held serve before crashing into the Dodin party with two more breaks of serve in the final set.

The American had earlier began the season with a four-match losing streak, winning a sum total of one set across the four matches she participated in. And now that the hoodoo has been broken, it remains to be seen if she can build on this.

Anisimova v Stephens Prediction and Tip

These are two out-of-form players who will be baying for a rare place in the third round at this tournament. Anisimova starts off a favourite on paper, at 4/9, but it could still get very close given her own form and as a result we are looking at the games market for over 20.5 games in the encounter.

Tip: Over 20.5 in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
