Jennifer Brady v Sara Sorribes Tormo Head to Head

The first time these two players ever met was in the qualifiers of the China Open of 2018 and Sorribes Tormo won that one in three sets. Brady had her revenge in their second meeting at the Nottingham Open of 2019.

Brady Falls in Doha Opener

It was bit of an anti-climax when Brady went from being a first-time Grand Slam runnerup to losing in the first round of the next tournament she participated in.

And it wasn’t even like she hadn’t given herself some break before playing in that next competition in Doha – there was a good few days between the final of the Australian Open and that opening round match at the Qatar Open.

Unfortunately for Brady, she fell to Anett Kontaveit in the very first round before she opted to travel to Miami for this competition.

Earlier this year, Brady had risen to number 13 in the world rankings thanks to a solid showing in Melbourne. She had first made it to the semifinal at the Grampians Trophy, where she lost to Ann Li but more vitally stormed into the Australian Open final in the following two weeks with wins over Donna Vekic, Jessica Pegula and Karolina Muchova before Naomi Osaka got the better of her.

Can she now kick-start proceedings here against an in-form and confident player?

Sorribes Tormo Edges Pera

In a match which lasted two hours and 46 minutes, Sorribes Tormo scraped past Bernarda Pera in three sets to set up this meeting against Brady. She won 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 to advance to the second round.

In the end it was an encounter of fine margins but one that saw both players break each other a few times. In the first set it looked like Sorribes Tormo had started off like those favourites odds had predicted as she broke her opponent twice to pouch the set.

The second set saw a big reversal of fortunes for the Spaniard who was broken early and while she broke back to make it 2-3, Sorribes Tormo then lost her serve two more times to lose the set.

Sorribes Tormo was then in early trouble in the third, losing her serve early and falling 3-0 behind her opponent. Another break of serve brought Pera to 5-1, with the American serving for the match.

The Spaniard, however, has known to a feisty fighter in recent times and showed why she had gained that reputation by saving two match-points and reeling off six straight games to clinch the set and match.

A match like that to go with a break of a day before her next match should hold Sorribes Tormo in a very good stead here.

Brady v Tormo Prediction and Tip

While Brady is a strong favourite here, Sorribes Tormo’s recent form has seen her win a title in Mexico and get to the semifinal of another competition in Monterrey. With her confidence sky-high, expecting her to put up a very strong showing.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
