Petra Martic v Kristina Mladenovic
Petra Martic takes on Kristina Mladenovic in the first round of the WTA event in Lyon. Neither is playing at a very high level but the struggles of Mladenovic have been far more pronounced in recent years. They played plenty of times over the years in the past and Martic wins 6-2.
Their most recent clash was in 2021 and Martic won that one on clay in two sets. It’s 4-2 for Martic on hard courts as well. She didn’t have the best start of the year but her career has been going down for a while now. Mladenovic is mostly a doubles player now but she can still play solid singles tennis at times.
It’s unlikely she will do much in this matchup as Martic is still the better player. It’s played indoors so we can expect a rather close affair but I think is Martic is still better.
I expect her precise game to give Mladenovic to much to handle so we opted for the somewhat risky pick of a win in straight sets. Martic should win if you’re not feeling that risky.

Alycia Parks v Julia Grabher
Alycia Parks had a spectacular finish to last year winning a couple of events indoors in Europe. She’ll make a return this year to try and add some points as she looks to continue and improve her ranking. Parks will be a very good player and has a lot of potential but she needs matches and experience.
Her serve is already a major weapon at this level and expect her to do a lot of damage with that. She can be very erratic at times and spray many errors but Grabher should have issues against her indoors. The Austrian player lost to her on clay a few years ago and that’s her best surface.
I don’t see her doing much against Parks indoors as she has only a 13-20 record on the surface. Compare that to Parks who has a 21-11 and it becomes a rather clear picture.
The American is the huge favourite to win but we think she might be a bit slow to start so we opted for the very risky over pick. Grabher can hopefully keep one close and bow out graciously but it’s a risky play. Betting on Parks is far safer so be aware of that.

Danka Kovinic v Viktorija Golubic
Another interesting match in Lyon between two players that play somewhat similarly. Both of them do their best on clay but are capable of being very tricky players to handle on hard courts. Indoors is probably a bit better for Golubic who I pick as the slightly better player.
Kovinic had the better start to the year but also better draws in Australia. It’s far too early to pick one player over the other in terms of form. Their only clash came in 2018 and Kovinic won that one. Golubic improved a lot since then so that’s not a good indicator as well.
Playstyle might be good as is the recent play indoors. In both segments, Golubic has a slight edge and it’s the reason why she’s favoured to win it.
Golubic is expected to win but this match could go either way. Due to that, we believe there is value in betting on three sets. It will be a longer match and both players will have good and bad moments, ideal for a three-set match.
