Novak Djokovic v Casper Ruud Head to Head

Their only meeting was at the Rome Masters in 2020 which Djokovic won in straight sets.

Djokovic Hopes To Equal Federer

World number one from Serbia, Novak Djokovic has had another phenomenal year with numerous accolades ranging from three Grand Slam titles to equaling Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal at 20 major titles each, overtaking Roger Federer for most number of weeks as world number one and eclipsing Pete Sampras for a seventh year end world number one ranking.

Having won the first three majors of the year, Djokovic looked on course to complete the calendar slam and with it being an Olympic year, perhaps even the Golden Calendar Slam.

The occasion seemed to get the better of the Serb as he was defeated by Alexander Zverev in the Olympic semi-finals and by Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final and on both occasions Djokovic displayed visible frustrations at falling short of his goal and also mentioned how mentally draining the process had been.

Taking a break from the tour, the world number returned for the Paris Masters last week winning a seventh title at Bercy and securing a record seventh year end world number one ranking.

With five year end Tour Final titles under his belt, but none since 2015, Djokovic will be looking to end the season on a high putting an end to any concerns around his confidence levels following the losses at the Olympic and at the US Open, as well as equaling Roger Federer’s record of six year-end Tour Finals titles.

Breakthrough Season For Ruud

Young Norwegian Casper Ruud has had a fantastic season and will be looking to keep the impressive run going into the final  tournament of the year.

The Norwegian has more than 50 wins this year which  includes five titles, including his first ever title on hard court.

A solid clay court player, Ruud picked four titles on the surface this year, in Geneva, Bastaad, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel and won his first hard court title in San Diego. As a result of this phenomenal success, Ruud has made massive gains in the rankings, becoming the first Norwegian into the top 10.

Since winning in San Diego, he reached the Round of 16 in Indian Wells and was a quarter-finalist indoors at both Vienna and Paris, thereby further evidencing that he is an improved player outside of clay as well.

The Norwegian will fancy being in the somewhat ‘less stacked’ group and would be hoping for a run of group stage results that could see him make the final four later this week.

Djokovic v Ruud Prediction and Tip

It has been a phenomenal year for Ruud reaching new highs in more ways than one. But, the Norwegian is up against the world number one indoors; not a challenge many would like or back themselves to succeed in.

Expect a straight sets win for Djokovic to kickstart his Tour Finals campaign
