David Goffin v Andrey Rublev Head to Head

This will only be the second meeting between the pair. They earlier met in the US Open’s round of 16 in 2017. Rublev prevailed in straights sets on that occasion.

Slow & Steady Revival of Goffin Continues

After managing to arrest a slide in rankings last year, Goffin has started the new year in impressive fashion. He won three matches at the ATP Cup, one of which was against Rafael Nadal.

This week at Melbourne, he started the campaign by winning against Jeremy Chardy in straight sets. His second-round match wasn’t as straight forward. After going two sets up, he lost the next two and had to dig deep in the fifth set to beat Frenchman, Pierre-Hughes Herbert.

Dropping to as low as 33 at one point of time last year, Goffin is once again knocking on the top ten. He resurrected his season last year by reaching finals at Cincinnati and Halle, quarter-finals at Wimbledon, and the round of 16 at the US Open.

Standing at just 5’11”, Goffin relies a lot on his court coverage and a strong two-handed backhand. This year he would be hoping to add to his four ATP titles, last of which was in 2017.

Rublev is in the Form of His Life

Apart from a disappointing exit from Paris Masters, the Russian ended last year pretty impressively. The 22-year-old won the title in Moscow and won all of his four matches at the David Cup. He has started this year where he left off. He has already won two titles so far at Doha and Adelaide. This has meant that he is currently at his highest ever ranking of 16, a remarkable rise from as low as 115 less than a year earlier.

He did drop a set in the first round against the local boy Christopher O’Connell. But apart from that, he has looked untroubled so far. He has already equaled his best run at Melbourne by reaching the third round that he previously achieved in 2018. Just like his opponent, he will be looking to break into the top ten rankings this season.

David Goffin v Andrey Rublev Predictions & Tips

This is a battle between two in-form players. Goffin seems to have found a second wind to her career, whereas Rublev is playing as well as he ever has. This is likely to be an extremely close contest and can go all the way. Rublev may just have the advantage considering that he is younger and Goffin is coming off a grueling five-setter.

Tip: Rublev to win in four sets: 3/1 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
