Roger Federer v Marton Fucsovics Head to Head

This is the third meeting between Roger Federer and Marton Fuscovics, and their second at the Australian Open. Their previous meetings were at the 2018 Australian Open and in Dubai in 2019.

Although both were straight set  wins for Federer, Fucsovics has kept it tight and the Federer victories have not come unchallenged.

Lucky Federer Looks To Make Most of Lifeline

Six time Australian Open winner Roger Federer is coming off a lucky third round escape against his 2018 US Open nemesis, John Millman from Australia. In a see-saw five setter, where Federer did not look his best, the Swiss prevailed 10-8 in a fifth-set after being down 4-8 at one point.

It was a pulsating third round tie, where atypically it was not an entirely “Roger Federer” crowd. With the crowd split down the middle, the home boy Milman put up a spectacular performance leaving his team and the Aussie fans proud. Unfortunately, when it looked it was all done, it was not to be for the Queenslander.

With memories of Arthur Ashe Stadium 2018 returning, where Federer looked physically drained and sapped of all energy, the Swiss this time around played in cooler conditions and was able to hang in and come back from a break down in the fifth set.

Eyeing a seventh title in Melbourne and a record 21st Grand Slam, Federer is in a section of the draw where most of his potential opponents suffered early losses and he remains the favorite to make the semi-finals from his quarter.

Up against another gritty player in Marton Fucsovics, Federer will be looking to get back to his fluent self, with timing and length back on some of his favorite shots, particularly the forehand.

In-Form Fucsovics Eyeing First Major Quarter-Final

Hungarian Marton Fucsovics has had a strong last couple seasons where he won his first ATP title in Geneva, was a finalist in Sophia, and followed it by reaching his highest ATP Ranking of 31 in mid-2019.

Despite a decline in form towards the latter part of 2019, Fucscovics has been in good form at the Australian Open making the fourth round of a major for the first time.

Defeating rising Next Gen Canadian Denis Shapovalov in a tight four-setter on Day 1, the Hungarian has gone from strength to strength defeating young teenager Jannik Sinner and young American Tommy Paul in straight sets.

Although his best results have come on the slower clay courts, Fuscovics has strong groundstrokes that have assisted him perform well on the harder courts too. Having played Roger Federer twice already, the Hungarian brings a sense of grit that enables him to hang with the best and at times even frustrate those who prefer to play on the faster courts, into making errors.

Roger Federer v Marton Fucsovics Predictions & Tips

Similar to the Millman matchup, Federer is up against a player who will look to play counterpuncher against the bigger names, a strategy that can and has at times frustrated higher ranked players who prefer the faster points, into errors.

Fucsovics has been in good form and will look to deploy a similar strategy, whereby looking to gain the upper hand and put the Swiss on the defensive early on.

After the Millman tussle, Federer will definitely feel the exhaustion, but coming out of a match like that will also give the Swiss plenty of confidence and he can be expected to get back into his rhythm and fluency.

A good contest on the cards, with the Swiss prevailing in three tight sets.
