Clay Court Specialist Ruud Looking to Improve on Hard Courts

2020 has been a great year for the Norwegian so far. He won his first-ever ATP title at Buenos Aires and reached another final a few weeks later at Santiago. On the back of that impressive run, he achieved his career-best ranking of 34 as well. But unfortunately, the 21-year-old has not been able to convert his clay-court success on the hard courts.

He has lost four out of the six matches on the hard courts this year and that included a first-round exit from the Australian Open as well.

Ruud’s still young and has a lot of potential to improve his game further. But the fact remains that he is little more than a clay court specialist at the moment.

All of his three career finals, four out of six victories against top 10 players and the best showing in a Grand Slam have come on the red soil.

Thus it will be interesting if he can manage to turn around his fortunes on the hardcourt and win his first-ever match at the Flushing Meadows. He qualified for the main draw twice in the last two years but went out on the first hurdle on both the occasions.

McDonald Looking to Climb the Rankings

Tennis has come full circle for the 25-year-old American in the last 12 months. He recorded his first-ever top 10 wins whilst reaching his first-ever ATP semifinal run at the Delray Beach Open last year. He followed it up with a last-eight showing at Acapulco and climbed as high as 57 in the world ranking. It looked like a matter of time before he would a top 50 player.

But a torn proximal hamstring tendon forced him to go under the knife and miss remainder of the season. His comeback has been fraught with abrupt injuries and a season suspension due to the pandemic.

The good news is this has also given him the time to ease himself back into the game and he has been playing a lot of matches at Exhibition events during the season break. He had a decent qualifying run at Cincinnati before crashing out in the first round.

But the signs are once again starting to look bright for the American and it should not be long before he will be back in the top 100.

Casper Ruud v Mackenzie McDonald Prediction & Tip

The American is slowly getting back to his best and Ruud will have to overcome his below-par performances on the hard courts to go through. The gulf in players’ abilities is not as wide as the rankings suggest. The Norwegian should come through this one in a tight contest.

Tip: Ruud to win in four sets: 10/3 (bet365)
