Salvatore Caruso v Ernesto Escobedo Head to Head

The pair have met twice on the tour before. And both the players won on one occasion each. Caruso won back in 2016 at the Tiburon challenger whereas Escobedo avenged that loss a year later at the Temple Challenger.

Caruso Turning His Season Around With Impressive Displays

When the current season resumed after suspension, Caruso’s win-loss record for the year was 4-9. He had only managed to win two matches in a single tournament only once and that was in the qualifying stages at Adelaide. But ever since he came back, his performances have improved and now he is just a win away from equaling his best-ever showing at a Grand Slam.

He beat two very high-quality players in Jannik Sinner and Jordan Thompson during the qualification stage at Cincinnati and played as well as he has this year in the first round here in New York. The Italian will be hoping for another strong performance in the second round which will ensure that he will achieve his career-best ranking when the rankings are announced next.

Next-Gen American Escobedo Looking to Break into the Top 100 Once Again

Escobedo was the next big thing in American tennis a few years ago. He won two challenger titles in 2016. He also won his first ATP tour match and beat a top 100 player the same year. Escobedo qualified for the Australian Open in 2017 and won his first-round match against Daniil Medvedev. He broke into the top 100 rankings himself and qualified for Miami Masters and reached as high as number 67 in the world.

But his progression from challenger events to the ATP tour did not go according to the plan. He had multiple shoulder and lumbar spine injuries over the next couple of years. And this resulted in constant injury breaks from the game which disrupted his rhythm and rankings. He fell as low as 290 in the world rankings last year.

But this year he seems to have finally put all his injury troubles behind him. And the season suspension was a blessing in disguise for him. Rather than trying to qualify for ATP level events, he was forced to play lots of exhibition events and build up his fitness and confidence back again. And he showed it in the first round when he beat a higher-ranked opponent in straight sets.

Salvatore Caruso v Ernesto Escobedo Prediction & Tip

It is going to be a really tight affair. Both the players are overcoming a difficult start to the season and have played some excellent tennis lately. Caruso’s experience will give him an edge. This match is likely to be won by the player who handles the big points better.

Tip: Caruso to win in four sets: 1/1 (bet365)
