Matteo Berrettini v Hugo Umbert Head to Head

The pair have only met once prior to this in a competitive match. And it was the Frenchman who prevailed on the hard courts at the Brest Challenger back in 2017.

Last Year’s Semi-Finalist Berrettini Starts Strong

The Italian had taken everyone by surprise last year when he had a dream run to the semi-finals here at the Flushing Meadows. He won two five-set thrillers against higher-ranked opponents to make it to the last four before losing to Rafael Nadal. He followed it up with excellent performances at the Shanghai Masters and Vienna to end the season strongly.

Berrettini along with Daniil Medvedev and Dominic Thiem was tipped to be the first time Grand Slam winners this year by many. But his start to the 2020 season was below par, to say the least. He was struggling with fitness at the start of the year and could only play in one major tournament before the season was suspended. That was at the Australian Open where he had crashed out in the second round.

But he used this forced break to good use by playing multiple exhibition events. Although he did look rusty at Cincinnati, there was enough evidence in the two performances last week to show that he was getting back to his best.

It will be a tough ask for him to repeat what he did last year, But if he continues to play the way he did in the first round, he has a good chance of going deep in the second week this year as well.

Inconsistent Season for Humbert So Far

The 22-year-old Frenchman has gone out in the opening two rounds on seven occasions this season. But he has also won his maiden ATP title in Auckland and reached the semi-finals at the Delray Beach Open. Despite those inconsistencies, the season overall has been a huge positive for Humbert who has achieved his career-best rankings three times already this year.

And with one more win, he is likely to achieve the feat for the fourth time this calendar year and break into the top 40 for the first time in his career.

Humbert has an excellent record on the hard courts where he has won 70% of the matches he has played. Even though the Frenchman has a poor record on the clay court, he would want to carry forward momentum going into the French Open later this month.

Matteo Berrettini v Hugo Umbert Prediction & Tip

Humbert can beat anyone on his day and his unpredictability can work to his advantage, but Berrettini will have far too much for the Frenchman. The Italian looked in fine form in the first round. And he should have no trouble in going through to the third round.

Tip: Berrettini to win in straight sets: 13/8 (bet365)
