Victoria Azarenka v Miyo Kato Head to Head

The two women have never met before – this will be their first competitive match.

Azarenka Re-shifting Focus Back on Tennis

Former world number one Azarenka has had a difficult 18 months or so off the court, being embroiled in a bitter custody battle in the US courts with her former partner over her son. That has caused her to miss a lot of tournaments, and, if her results this year are anything to go by, she is still ring rusty.

On the singles front, her best showing came in Acapulco, where she reach the quarter-finals, also winning the doubles there with her partner Zheng Saisai. However, she lost in the second round in Indian Wells to a familiar foe in the shape of Serena Williams, and was beating at the first time of asking in Miami by Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.

A good run in Monterrey will give her a much needed boost.

Former Japan Open Runner-up Kato Looks for a Move-up

Kato, the 24-year-old from Osaka, is used to playing on the ITF tour, where she has won 3 titles, all on hard courts, the most recent of which came in the Pan Pacific Open in her native Japan last September. She has little experience on the senior tour, usually having to compete in qualifying tournaments just to try and gain entry to the main draw, as she has had to do here.

However, she does have one WTA final to her name, contesting the 2017 Japan’s Women’s Open, where she lost to Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan.

Kato replaces Azarenka’s original scheduled opponent, Katie Boulter of Great Britain.

Azarenka v Kato Predictions & Tips

Azarenka will start as the heavy odds-on favourite for this match at 2/25, whilst you can get 101/20 on the Japanese. Azarenka might be still struggling to find her best form, but this is one match she should win with comparative ease.

Tip: Azarenka to win 2-0: 4/5 (bet365)
