Victoria Azarenka v Zarina Diyas Head to Head
The pair have met once before, at the Indian Wells Open in 2016, with Azarenka winning a second round match comfortably in two sets.
Azarenka Easing Her Way into the Tournament
Azarenka came into the Monterrey tournament on the back of a difficult year so far which has seen her struggle for form and confidence after her well-documented off the court issues.
However, Tuesday’s straight sets win over Miyu Kato of Japan will not have taken much out of her, and, with that victory under her belt, she can start to play her way into the tournament now.
The hard surface of Mexico suits her game with its relentless groundstrokes and controlled aggression, and against an opponent like Diyas who is not known for her mobility around the court, she would appear to hold all the cards in this match.
The big question is whether Azarenka can clinically destroy her opponent to send a warning to all her other opponents in the competition.
Former Japan Open Winner Diyas Looking for Form
Diyas, currently ranked 94 in the world, is some way below the form that saw her threaten to break into the top-30 four years ago, and claim her solitary senior WTA title at the Japan Open in 2017.
Her 2019 record to date is poor, with her best result coming at the Indian Wells Challenger event, where she reached the semi-final, only to be beaten by America’s Jennifer Brady. She then got through to the main event in California, only to lose in the first round.
Since then she had to retire injured from the Challenger event in Guadalajara, and failed to get out of the qualifying competition in Miami.
Tuesday’s straight sets win over Mexican Renate Zarazua though was a welcome boost to her confidence ahead of her match with Azarenka.
