Belinda Bencic v Taylor Townsend Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour. However, the two players met in the final of the 2013 Wimbledon Juniors, where Bencic defeated Townsend to be crowned as the champion.

Bencic Coming in Strong

After spending the last couple of seasons struggling with form and injuries, Bencic is finally making great strides on the tour, firing on all cylinders.

The 2015 Canadian Open winner has had one of the best starts to the season. Starting with a semifinal run in Hobart, she reached the third round in the Australian Open and later, won her first title in more than three years in Dubai. It was a dream run for the Swiss, having defeated some big ticket players like Aryna Sabalenka, Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina, and Petra Kvitova.

She then played in the Indian Wells Open where she was a semifinalist – a feat she achieved after moving past the likes of Naomi Osaka and Karolina Pliskova.

In Charleston, she has been highly clinical with her performance, defeating Destanee Aiava and Alexandra Kiick in straight sets.

A Positive Start for Townsend

Townsend started her journey in Charleston with a three-set win over the Australian qualifier Astra Sharma. She followed it with a straight-set win over the number 7 seed Julia Goerges. This is, by far, the best performance that Taylor has delivered this season.

She arrived for the tournament with a win-loss record of 6-6, with early losses in Miami and Indian Wells. She had some success in the 125K Series events in Newport Beach and Indian Wells, reaching the quarterfinal and third round respectively.

As for her run in the Australian Open series, she lost her opening games in Auckland and Melbourne.

Bencic v Townsend Predictions & Tips

Comparing the two players, it comes as no surprise to see Bencic come out on the top as the overwhelming favourite. Her form this season has been much more superior than that of Townsend’s.

However, the American will be eager for a win here and more so than that, she will be keen on avenging her loss all those years ago. Of course, it will be a tough ask for her but an entertaining match nonetheless.

Tip: Bencic to win in straight sets: 8/25 (Unibet)
