Carla Suarez Navarro v Polona Hercog Head to Head

The pair have met once before, back in 2010 in the Acapulco Open, with Hercog winning on that occasion in straight sets.

Suarez Navarro Will Enjoy Being Back on Clay

The world 27 and two-time WTA tour winner Suarez Navarro is back on her favourite surface of clay after spending the first part of the season playing on hard courts.

Her best result of the year so far came in Dubai where she reached the quarter-final before going out to Elina Svitolina, but she went out at the second round stage in both Indian Wells and Miami to Natalia Vikhlyantseva and Venus Williams respectively.

Unlike many contemporary players, the Spaniard uses a single-handed backhand and will be hoping that it works to good effect to produce the cross-court shots that she enjoys in her match against Hercog.

Hercog, Clay Court specialist

Like her opponent, the world number 89 Hercog also has 2 WTA senior titles to her name, but they both came a long time ago, in the same event – she won the Swedish Open in 2011, and defended her title a year later.

Significantly, all five of her WTA finals have been on clay, including her most recent appearance which was in the Istanbul Cup last April where she lost to Pauline Parmentier of France in a close three set encounter.

Her record on the ITF tour also shows her overwhelming preference for clay – 18 finals, 17 wins, and all on that surface.

Beyond that, her 2019 record to date offers little encouragement. She qualified in Melbourne, Doha, and Dubai only to lose in the first round of the main draw. However, she did manage to get to the second round in Miami, only to lose in three sets to Simona Halep.

Suarez Navarro v Hercog Predictions & Tips

Suarez Navarro is the odds-on favourite at 1/2, whilst Hercog is priced at 48/29. Both are clay court specialists, but the Spaniard is ranked more than 60 places higher than her opponent, and should have too much for her, although it may go to three sets.

Tip: Carla Suarez Navarro to win 2-0: 5/4 (Unibet)
