Elina Avanesyan v Clara Tauson Head to Head
They met for the first time in the third round of this year’s French Open. After an impressive start from Tauson, Avanesyan fought back to win the match 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.

Avanesyan is making her debut appearance at the Ningbo Open and currently sits at a career high ranking of 62nd on the WTA Rankings.
For good reason, she’s predominantly known for her clay court prowess. In 2023, Avanesyan added to her ITF title tally and made the fourth round at the French Open despite coming through qualifying. She defeated Bencic in the first round and none other than Tauson in the third round.
Her US swing only consisted of one Challenger event and the US Open itself. At neither of which did she excel, losing out in the first and second rounds respectively. She did snatch a set against Ostapenko, but ultimately ended up losing.
Avanesyan chose not to compete at either of the events in China last week and so hasn’t played a match in over three weeks. On the one hand, she may struggle because of her hard-court inactivity and lack of recent matches.
But equally, she should be well rested and fresh. The latter of which should help to defend against Tauson’s aggressive groundstrokes and increase her chances of winning.

Tauson’s Fitness could be a Hinderance
Tauson is also making her debut at the Ningbo Open after some good wins over in the US. Going into this match, there is speculation surrounding Tauson’s fitness and health, as just four days ago she collapsed with fatigue in her second round match at the Guangzhou Open.
After a display of clean and powerful hitting in the first set, Tauson faced stiffer resistance in the second and struggled to compete in such humid conditions. Had they not affected her, she very likely would have gone on to win the match.
By defeating Potapova in the US Open and Krejcikova the week prior, she showed the level is there, but can she consistently produce it? Following both these victories, she lost the very next match to lower ranked opponents.
Tauson must keep the rallies to a minimum and try especially hard to win the match in straight sets.
Avanesyan v Tauson Prediction and Tip
This match will be determined off Tauson’s racquet. If she plays well and has recovered from last week, she’ll be too strong for Avanesyan on a hard court. If not, Avanesyan can play a consistent style and may be emerge victorious. Either way, there’s a good chance Tauson wins the first set!
