A finalist at the Strasbourg Open and with a third round appearance at both, the French Open and Wimbledon, Blinkova had been doing well on the women’s circuit. She had climbed up to 34th in the world as a result.
More recently, however, her form had taken a plunge and after defeating Shuai Zhang in the first round of the Montreal Open, she hadn’t won anything. That was a month and a half and four tournaments ago. Daria Kasatkina, Petra Kvitova, Lin Zhu and Jodie Burrage had all got the better of her.
Which is why despite facing off against the relatively unknown Viktoria Hruncakova in her opener here, Blinkova had started out at 10/11 odds.
Ending her four-match losing streak, however, Blinkova managed to get past Hruncakova in straight sets. She won 6-3, 7-5 to make the second round where she will face an opponent who has had similar issues to Blinkova.

Fruhvirtova Finally Halts the Slide
If Blinkova would have been worried with her four-match losing streak at the start of her first round match, it’s difficult to gauge the kind of mood that Fruhvirtova might have been in coming into her opener here.
The Czech player had lost nine successive matches before this tournament and it was no surprise that bet365 was offering 21/10 for her win here against Rebeka Masarova.
When Fruhvirtova lost the first set 6-1 though, it looked like the writing was on the wall. Another easy defeat looked to be on the cards.
Fortunately for the once-40th-ranked player, she was able to get past Masarova in the second set before her opponent retired from her encounter in the third. Not the most ideal way to win one but for a player who had won just three sets from her previous nine matches, a bit of a relief all the same.
