Sebastian Korda v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

They have played once before. At a Challenger event three years ago, Korda won 6-4, 6-4.

Korda May Need his Best to Win

In many ways, the 23-year-old American has had a rather frustrating season. A wrist injury prevented him from competing for 3 months and disrupted an exceptional run of form.

After reaching the final of the first Adelaide international and the quarter-final at the Australian Open, a place within the top 20 looked as if it was a formality. Unfortunately, a niggling wrist injury became unbearable and forced him to retire midway through his quarter-final match.

To get an indication of how capable this guy is on fast surfaces, just appreciate the calibre of players he beat within January alone: Sinner, Medvedev, Hurkacz and Murray.

Since returning from the injury, Korda has struggled to replicate such performances and has won just 50% percent of his matches played. Whilst he may be playing worse, that Win/Loss ratio is by no means poor and most importantly he’s back to full fitness.

Last week at the Zhuhai Championships, some untimely lapses in concentration cost Korda the match against Khachanov; a player with a similar game style to Popyrin. Perhaps a worrying sign of things to come, or an ideal prerequisite match.

Popyrin Makes his Return to Kazakhstan

Popyrin last competed at the Astana Open in 2020, where he failed to make it through the qualifying rounds. Now a much more distinguished player, he’s decided to return, and this time has the luxury of automatically entry into the main draw.

This event marks the start of his Asian swing and hopefully can set him up for a strong finish to the year. He’s only competed at a couple of events within the last two months and achieved varying degrees of success at each of them.

At the Cincinnati Masters, he came through qualifying and made the quarterfinals stage, after defeating Altmaier and Ruusuvuori. Whereas, in the US Open, he faced Stricker in the first round and failed to overcome him for the second time this year.

His overall season has been good, reaching a career high ranking of 40th and an ATP Title to boot. The title came a few months back in Umag and perhaps explains his relative inactivity over August and September.

Korda v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

Korda is the favourite going into this match, but in this instance it could go either way. Popyrin should fresh and ready for a battle.
