Can Botic van de Zandschulp Regain some Form?

Van de Zandschulp has entered the Astana Open for a second year running. Twelve months ago, he lost out to the eventual winner, Djokovic, in the second round.

He hasn’t had the most successful season so far and has seen his ranking slip from 35th in January, to where it is now at world no.68.

His overall YTD Win/Loss record is a concerningly low 17-19, but on hard courts alone, it’s a more promising 12-10.Prior to a first-round win at the All England Lawn Tennis Championships, the dutchman had lost his last six matches. And since Wimbledon, Van de Zandschulp has only played three more matches: with his sole victory coming by way of injury retirement.

An ankle injury in mid-July, stopped him from competing and disrupted his US Open preparation. It’s therefore no surprise that he lost to Evans in New York. On the plus side, he won the firsts set and seemed to be physically fit again.

Shevchenko has a Good Chance

He too will be competing at the Astana Open for the second time in his career. Except this year, he’s been given a wildcard into the main draw and so hasn’t had to fight his way through the qualifiers.

Shevchenko turned pro in 2018 and has very steadily ascended up the rankings to where he currently sits at world no.86In stark contrast to his opponent, Shevchenko has competed in nine events since Wimbledon and whilst he hasn’t progressed far in many of these tournaments, he has recorded some good victories.

He defeated Cressy and Korda to qualify for the Citi Open, and then Fucsovics and Schwartzman in the qualifiers for the Cincinnati Masters.

Ten days ago, at a Challenger event in Poland, Shevchenko retired injured from his semi-final match against Kopriva. In the days preceding this, he played three tough deciding set matches; so, let’s hope this withdrawal was primarily due to fatigue, as opposed to an impactful injury.

van de Zandschulp v Shevchenko Prediction and Tip

With odds at 4/9 for van de Zandschulp and 7/4 for Alexander Shevchenko, it may be worth taking a risk on this one. The Dutchman is the better player on paper but is undoubtedly low in confidence.
