Ekaterina Alexandrova v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head

There has been only one previous meeting between these two players and that came in the Linz Open 2018 quarterfinal. Alexandrova had won that match in straight sets.

Alexandrova Stuns Samsonova

With Alexandrova having entered her round two match on the back of three defeats from her previous five matches and with a 22nd-ranked opponent against her, it was no surprise that she had started off a second favourite in the encounter.

Interestingly, she was a 17/10 underdog (with bet365) against Liudmilla Samsonova, rather long for a player who is actually ranked higher than her opponent. And it isn’t even like Alexandrova doesn’t like playing in hardcourt competitions, having reached the final of the Cleveland Open in the last week of August.

What followed was a bit of stunning piece of tennis as Alexandrova needed just an hour and 18 minutes to clinch a 6-4, 6-2 win over Samsonova.

And this was after Samsonova had taken a 2-0 lead in the first set, only to drop her serve four more times in the match. Alexandrova saved four of the five break-points she had faced while breaking her in all but one of the five chances she got.

She will now start off a favourite in this quarterfinal against another Russian player – her third in a row, having earlier edged past Anna Kalinskaya. bet365 offers 1/2 for her win here.

Pavlyuchenkova Makes it Two Surprise Wins in a Row

Pavlyuchenkova hasn’t had too much hardcourt success this season with her record prior to this tournament reading 1-4 on outdoor hardcourts.

Which is why, she was a second-favourite going into each of her first two rounds here – 11/10 odds against Donna Vekic and 1/1 in her second round match against Linda Noskova.

Her first round win over Donna Vekic was a shocker, with Pavlyuchenkova dropping just two games in that encounter. In the second round, the Russian needed two hours and 12 minutes and was forced to ward off poor serving in the second set to clinch it in three.

She was broken once in the second to allow Noskova to level things out but in the decider that followed she retaliated with three breaks of serves.

Pavlyuchenko will now face another challenging opponent but given her record in the tournament so far, it seems likely that she won’t be too bothered as she looks to climb back into the top 50 of the rankings. She is 8/5 to win this with 888Sport.

Alexandrova v Pavlyuchenkova Prediction and Tip

Backing Alexandrova for a win here but it could get to be a close encounter that sees two – or three – strongly-fought sets.
