Match Winning Odds*

Mannarino Takes the Scenic Route

Mannarino’s bid to win what would be his second title of the season, and the fourth of his career, remains on track.

However, having beat compatriot Arthur Rinderknech in the first round in straight sets in the first round, and Alibek Kachmazov in three sets in the second, he took the scenic route against the Austrian Jurij Rodionov in their quarter-final match.

At first, it all had been plain sailing for the Frenchman as he breezed past the world number 107 in the first set, breaking him twice.

And when Mannarino went a break-up in the second set, a routine win seemed on the cards.

Rodionov, though, broke back immediately, and suddenly Mannarino had a fight on his hands.

Serving to stay in the set, he had to save two set points, and then, in his next service game, four more.

The pressure continued into the tie-break, with Rodionov earning four more set points.

Not only did Mannarino save them all, but, when a match point came along, he grabbed it at the first opportunity.

Ofner Claims Austrian Bragging Rights

Ofner had been struggling for positive results since the tour moved away from clay, but he has shown great resilience to make the semi-finals in Astana, recovering from the loss of the first set to defeat Marton Fucsovics in the first round, and them upsetting the local crowd to knock out home favourite Alexander Bublik in the second.

His quarter-final opponent was a man he knows very well, compatriot Dominic Thiem, in a match where there was more than a semi-final spot at stake. There was also bragging rights when it comes to be regarded as the best Austrian tennis player right now.

At first the argument appeared to be running in favour of Thiem, who secured the one break of serve needed to take the first set.

But Ofner did not panic, secured a break early in the second set, and, then, having seen three sets points saved, made the fourth one count.

Both men had break point opportunities early in the third set, but it was Ofner who finally got his nose in front.

And he underlined his superiority on the evening with another break on the evening, allowing him to serve out. It was a victory he will particularly savour.

Mannarino v Ofner Prediction and Tip

Mannarino is the higher ranked player, and, in theory at least, the one more at home on this surface. Ofner, though, has proved he is a tough opponent this week, so his chances cannot be discounted entirely.
