Alexei Popyrin v Matteo Arnaldi Head to Head

Popyrin and Arnaldi played once so far and it was earlier this year in Umag. The Australian won that match 6-7(2) 7-5 6-3.

Match Winning Odds*

Popyrin in Shaky Form

Alexei Popyrin hasn’t done much since his solid run in Cincinnati, losing a couple of the most recent matches he played. The Australian should be a decent fit in these conditions as he has all the tools needed to be well.

He has a powerful serve and a really good forehand, and he doesn’t need much more. It powered him to a 34-25 record so far this year and that’s pretty solid. Popyrin is 16-13 on hard courts which is pretty solid but not as good as his record on clay.

This is only the second time he will play in Shanghai, as he took part in 2019 but lost in the qualification. He’s a far better player this time around but is facing a tricky opponent who has played far better lately.

He beat him last time but on a surface that likely favours him more. It will be tough to replicate that result this time around, particularly when you look at all the factors.

Arnaldi Has Done Well Recently

Matteo Arnaldi is one of those Italian players that does better on quicker surfaces than slower ones. He’s really strong on hard courts and proved that this year making him a dangerous player in Shanghai.

This has been a proper breakout season for him so far, with 47 wins and 23 losses, with 19 of wins coming on hard courts. Quite a few of those came lately as he played in the qualifiers for the China Open and did really well.

The attacking style of play works well for these types of courts, as his forehand is a seriously good one. He can also serve well, which helps in setting up that forehand, among other things.

He has never played here before, so that will take some time to get used to, but he’s facing a a player out of form and should win comfortably.

Popyrin v Arnaldi Prediction and Tip

The Australian isn’t playing well lately and I don’t think that will change. Take Arnaldi to win because he’s played far better recently.
