Thompson Returns from Chengdu Fitness Concern
Thompson looked to be going great guns when he took to court at the Chengdu Open a couple of weeks ago. He had defeated fellow Aussie Max Purcell in the first round despite starting out a 1/1 underdog in that encounter before pulling off another straight-set win over Dusan Lajovic in the second.
In the quarterfinal that followed, Thompson fought hard against Roman Safiullin only to lose the first set in a tie-breaker. And before the start of the second, the Aussie was forced to retire from the encounter because of fitness concerns.
The good news is that he is now back and will be in action as he looks to improve on his 27-15 win-loss record in hardcourt tennis this season (including Challengers and qualifiers).
He has two Challenger level tournament wins under his belt already this season on this surface and unless he hasn’t recovered from his injury at Chengdu, will look to squash his qualifier opponent’s challenge and make the second round here.

Atmane at Career-Best Ranking
While Atmane has played in only one main draw match this season – and lost that in Zhuhai – he has also had a year to remember. It’s been a season in which he has broken into the top 150 for the first time and for a player who was ranked 854th in the world at the start of 2022, it is definitely a big deal.
What’s a bigger deal is that he has been improving on a continuous basis.
Already a winner of two Challenger and one Futures event this year, Atmane has risen from 299th at the start of the year to his current ranking of 147th in the world.
And now with back to back victories in the qualifiers as well, Atmane will add another feather to his cap as he features in his first ever Masters 1000 competition.
It remains to be seen if he adds a maiden ATP win to his belt here but one way or the other he will be buoyant with confidence entering this match.
