Having entered the China Open as a tournament winner of the Zhuhai Open, Khachanov would have felt he had a good chance of going the distance. He might have also thought he could test some of the top players in the world.
Instead, it was Khachanov who got tested in the very first round, losing to Lorenzo Musetti in the opener.
So since his return from his fitness issues, Khachanov has featured in three tournaments, winning one and losing in the first round at the other two. This adds a bit of a question-mark around how his form is looking entering this tournament in Shanghai.
The good news for Khachanov is that he will be up against a player who has never been ranked better than 236th on the ATP charts but he will hope he can be a tad clinical here.

Zhukayev Overcomes Napolitano
In a first round match between two qualifiers it was Zhukayev who came through in straight sets against Stefano Napolitano to seal off a rare second round berth.
Needing an hour and 55 minutes in the encounter, Zhukayev overcame the fellow qualifier 7-5, 7-5 to set up this meeting with Khachanov.
Zhukayev, who had earlier defeated another favourite in the form of Jason Jung in the first qualifying round, saved all three of the break-points he faced in his encounter. On the other hand, he was afforded 12 breaking opportunities and converted two of them – both in 12th games of the sets.
He now faces a player ranked 14th in the world and it would be a very different sort of a challenge with Zhukayev not getting the kind of opportunities he got against Napolitano.
