Concerns About Paul’s Current Form
Tommy Paul’s recent form is a bit of a concern. The world no. 12, who had a brilliant run up till the US Open, has not won a match since his round of 16 defeat in Flushing Meadows.
The American lost both of his Davis Cup matches to Botic Van de Zandschulp and Emil Ruusuvuori respectively and lost his only singles match at the Laver Cup to Casper Ruud. Most recently, he went down in the first round of the China Open to Daniil Medvedev.
So five defeats on the trot will put a bit of pressure on the 26-year-old. However, he will be hoping to draw inspiration from the earlier part of the season, which saw him reach two finals in Acapulco and Eastbourne and reach the semifinals at the Australian Open and in Toronto.
As a result of his consistency, Paul has risen from no. 32 at the start of the season to the current career high of no. 12.
He is 35-24 at the tour level and will be looking to make a solid start on his Shanghai debut.

Ofner Battles Past Varillas
Austria’s Sebastian Ofner battled past Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas in the first round of the Shanghai Open.
The world no. 49, who was a semifinalist in Astana last week, needed two hours and eight minutes to beat the world no. 65, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (8-6).
Ofner’s win improved his season record to 10-10 on the tour and 58-26 across levels.
Ofner has played in six Challenger finals this year, winning just one of them though, and that was in Salzburg, Austria in July.
At the tour level, his best this year was a fourth round finish at the French Open.
In Thursday’s match, he served 12 aces and 32 winners and won 82% points on the back of his first serve. He also saved a set point in the first set. Can he keep the form going in the next round?
