Tips & Odds*:

Ben Shelton v Roman Safiullin Head to Head

Safiullin won their only lower level meeting in 2022. This will be their first meeting at the tour level.

Shelton Solid Against Munar

US Open semifinalist Ben Shelton put on a fine display in his Shanghai opener on Friday as the American began with a straight sets win over Jaume Munar in the second round.

The left-handed Shelton saved 3 of 3 break points and converted 2 of 5 to beat the world no. 82, 6-4, 6-4.

Shelton improved his season record to 19-21. He has been outstanding in the hard court majors this season, reaching the last eight in Melbourne and the final four in Flushing Meadows.

The 20-year-old world no. 20 has however not won consecutive matches in any other tour level tournaments this year. Can he win two in a row in Shanghai? Having played just once in an ATP 1000 tournament before this year, his previous best was a third round finish in Cincinnati last year. He will be aiming to win on Sunday and make his round of 16 debut in ATP Masters tournaments.

Safiullin Stuns Zverev

Just 10 days after being beaten by Alexander Zverev in the Chengdu Open final, Roman Safiullin got his revenge over the German in Shanghai.

Safiullin stunned the ninth seed 6-3, 6-1 to ease into the third round. The world no. 50 was not broken in the match as he saved the only one that he faced, while he converted 4 of 6 break points to beat the world no. 10.

The Russian has been in splendid form recently, and he had beaten Andy Murray 6-3, 6-2 in the first round.

The two wins improved the 26-year-old to 17-15 at the tour level. He is 36-21 across levels and 7-1 in his last eight matches, which includes the runner-up finish in Chengdu.

This is the first season when he is playing Masters tournaments and it’s the third time he has made it past the second round. Can the 2023 Wimbledon quarterfinalist reach the fourth round of a Masters tournament for the first time in his career?
